Cow cess to be imposed soon

LUDHIANA: The municipal corporation has issued a notification saying the state government has approved imposition of cow cess in the city. The state government has also allocated departments responsible for collection of the tax, which will be imposed on different articles.
Last September, the MC general house gave the nod for imposition of cow cess and also finalized the list of items on which it was to be imposed.Electricity was excluded from the list at the time.
However, a few residents filed a writ petition in court, following which the local bodies department asked the MC to ask for objections. But the notification issued by the office of additional chief secretary, local bodies department, Satish Chandra says no objections were filed.
MC veterinary officer Dr Y P Singh said they received the notification on Tuesday and it was sent to senior officials to start the process of implementation.
MC chief Kanwalpreet Kaur Brar said the notification would now be sent to the Finance and Contracts Committee and cow cess would be imposed as soon as possible. She also said departments responsible for collection of cow cess would be informed.
Meanwhile, mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria called a meeting of the F and CC on Thursday. The issue of cow cess is likely to be discussed in the meeting.
